Crystal Gillies from Fraserburgh has just graduated with a BA (Hons) Law and Management from Robert Gordon University’s Aberdeen Business School after successfully completing the 2+2 Degree Link Partnership between the university and Aberdeen College.
The Degree Link Partnership enables students studying for a HND at college over two years to enter the third-year of an Honours degree course at university.
After achieving an HND in Legal Services at Aberdeen College, Crystal (22), progressed into third-year of the Law and Management course.
She said: “The transition from college to university was a daunting prospect as the environments are so different. I was really impressed by the facilities at Aberdeen Business School and felt the support from tutors and my new classmates soon made me feel at home.”
The hard-working student’s path to attain her Honours was not always smooth, especially when Crystal and her fiancé Alan were involved in a serious car crash in April 2010 – the day before her final third-year exams.
Crystal added: “The crash was an awful experience and really couldn’t have happened at a worse time, I suffered whiplash and burn abrasions to my legs.
“As well as the physical pain, all I could think about were my exams and if this would jeopardise my degree. Thankfully, the university was very understanding and I was able to re-sit my assessments later in the year, which thanks to the support of my fiancé and family, I passed with flying colours.”
Despite the demanding timetable of her dissertation and other coursework, Crystal is sad to leave university citing her third-year placement as a highlight:
“Studying at university has been one of the best experiences of my life. My third-year placement with Thistle Catering Services as a Business Development Assistant, engaging with clients to maintain and develop relationships gave me real industry experience. Lorraine and Graham, the owners, really encouraged me to come on board and as a result I’ve gained a lot of confidence and am really looking forward to launching my career. ”
Crystal now hopes to find employment in the local oil and gas sector.
