A Fraserburgh beach is the only beach in Aberdeenshire to be given the highest rating of Excellent for the cleanliness of its water.
Fraserburgh Philorth beach was given the top rating by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)in their 2016 report on Scottish bathing waters.
The only beach to receive the Excellent rating in Aberdeenshire, Fraserburgh Philorth, was also only one of 17 to receive the award throughout the whole of Scotland.
Fraserburgh Councillor Brian Topping believes that the rating is partly down to the hard work done by the scouts, the community safety groups and the rangers who help clean up the beach.
He said “They have contributed quite significantly towards this award.
“The water cleanliness also comes down to a lot of people who do take their rubbish with them.”
Cllr Topping stated that the rating was also great news for “the fantastic water sports that Fraserburgh is renowned for.”
The 2016 bathing water classifications are the first classifications under the new directive which is now standardised across Europe.
For the first time classifications apply to each bathing water at the start of the season rather than being the final result of the previous year’s season.
Lynda McGuigan, Chair of the Fraserburgh Area Tourism Group, believes that the rating is a real bonus for the town.
She said: “It’s a big positive and we have had a lot of them recently.
“Things are definitely moving forward in a very positive way and we hope we see that reflected in the visitor numbers too.”
The Fraserburgh beach will now be able to display signs highlighting the cleanliness of the sea.
Cllr Topping said: “If we lived in a hotter country then we would be a top destination.
“Let’s keep our beach as clean as we possibly can because we have such a fantastic facility right on our doorstep.
The news of the top rating for the beach’s bathing water comes just after the council have put forward money to repair and repaint the shelters and other structures around the beach.
Fraserburgh Tiger Hill beach was given a Sufficient rating in the report while Rosehearty received a Good rating for its bathing water.
