Local football fan, Michael Cockrell, got the chance of a lifetime last week as Scotland and England supporters competed in a historic fixture when the nations went head-to-head in the Vauxhall Fans Match on November 18.
Michael, from Fraserburgh, had the opportunity play for the Scotland team after winning a competition run by Vauxhall, the Home Nations football sponsor.
The game was streamed live on the Vauxhall Football TV YouTube channel and fans of both nations tuned in to show support for their country, ahead of the meeting between Scotland and England at Celtic Park later in the evening.
Managed by former England boss Terry Venables and captained by soccer AM’s Tubes, the Three Lions fans team came out on top by beating legendary Scotland manager Craig Brown¹s side, captained by The Sun’s Gordon Smart, 6-2 at Lesser Hampden.
Vauxhall, the proud sponsor of Home Nations football as lead sponsor of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, hosted the event.
Commenting on the event, Cheryl Stibbs, Vauxhall’s sponsorship marketing manager, said: There was a lot of excitement around the Vauxhall International Friendly between Scotland and England - especially after the first game at Wembley.
“The Vauxhall Fans Match was the perfect warm-up for the main event and it was a match played in great spirits with two great sets of fans.
“Everyone seemed to relish playing in a match live on the internet at such a great venue not to mention being led by two brilliant managers and playing alongside our guest players.
“Congratulations to the England team on their victory and we hope to look forward to a rematch at some point in the not-too-distant future.”
A collection of celebrities and footballing legends were involved in the fixture, including Tubes (Soccer AM) and Ralf Little (Royle Family) for England.
Former Three Lions midfielder Lee Sharpe had been set to feature but failed a late fitness test.
For Scotland, Don Hutchison, Derek Stillie, Gordon Smart (The Scottish SunEditor) and Neil Forsyth (journalist/writer/author) all played a part in the game.
