MSP for North East Scotland Christian Allard has written to local authorities inviting them to cooperate to ensure that protocol for getting a downsizing grant does not penalise tenants who are willing to mover further afield.

At present, council house tenants can receive a downsizing grant if they move from a larger property which has three or more bedrooms into a smaller council or housing association property. However, tenants are only able to do so if they move to a property within the same council authority.

The SNP MSP has written to both Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City Councils after being contacted by constituents who had not received a downsizing grant following their move from a three-bedroom property in Aberdeenshire to a smaller property in Aberdeen.

Commenting, Mr Allard said: “I have written to the local authorities to ask them to work together so that tenants who are willing to move further afield are not penalised for doing so.

“If suitable properties are not available in one council authority it makes sense that tenants should not be discouraged from moving to where there are more suitable houses available.

“Social housing stocks remain low after decades of neglect under previous administrations. The Scottish Government has made a concerted effort to remedy this situation.”
