North-east MSP Christian Allard has welcomed Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead’s announcement that £700K in Scottish Government funding is to be used to back a plan to achieve a more profitable seafood sector.

The report from the Scottish Seafood Partnership, which brings together representatives from the fisheries, aquaculture and processing sectors, has identified six key areas to further enhance the industry’s reputation and market reach, including market development and quality.

Mr Allard worked in the Scottish fishing industry for more than 25 years before becoming an MSP. In his role as Member of the Scottish Parliament for the North East Scotland Region, Mr Allard has called for widespread support of the Scottish fishing industry.

Commenting on the announcement the SNP MSP said: “It is fantastic that the Scottish Government is backing the industry’s action plan to strengthen the position of Scotland’s thriving fishing sector.

“This announcement demonstrates that the SNP Government is committed to building on the important role our fishing communities play in contributing to Scotland’s economy.

“With the abundance of high-quality seafood landing at ports in the region, we are spoilt for choice here in the North East. So I would urge people to take the opportunity to buy local and eat Scottish fish.”
