Banff and Buchan MP Eilidh Whiteford will launch her Private Members’ Bill later this week.
Dr. Whiteford’s Bill aims to prevent and combat violence against women.
Commenting ahead of the launch, Dr. Whiteford said: “The Bill I will publish on Thursday will enable the Government to move towards a ratification of the Istanbul Convention.
“This is an international treaty that would improve the lives of women and girls here and at home and abroad.
“We’ve been waiting for more than four-and-a-half years for the UK Government to ratify the Istanbul Convention.
“It is no longer a valid excuse to say there is not enough Parliamentary time to take forward the necessary changes to domestic legislation,” she said.
“I have, however, listened to the Government and the Bill will enable them to set out a clear timetable to bring forward the required legislation, and rafity the Istanbul Convention as a national priority.
“If the UK Government is as committed to ratifying the Convention as they say, they should be able to support this Bill,” she added.
Dr Whiteford will present the Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Ratificatqion of Convention) Bill at 9.15am on Thursday, December 8, with a Q&A to follow.
