Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Alison McInnes has today said calls for the Justice Secretary to resign made by former government advisor and respected legal figure Lord McCluskey represents a blow to Kenny MacAskill’s authority.

Commenting, Ms McInnes said: “Lord McCluskey is a highly respected figure who has previously advised the First Minister and Justice Secretary on the role of the UK Supreme Court.

“His intervention is a blow to the Justice Secretary’s authority and highlights Kenny MacAskill’s divisive and blinkered demeanour.

“Kenny MacAskill has become increasingly isolated in defending the centralisation of our police, the industrial scale of stop and search, the decision to allow armed officers to undertake routine duties, court closures and his plans to scrap corroboration. On each, he has wilfully ignored the reasoned concerns of legal professionals, human rights organisations and the public.”

“He risks further damaging Scotland’s justice system unless he starts to listen,” she added.

Lord McCluskey has previously advised the Scottish Government as the independent Review Group examining the relationship between the High Court of Justiciary and the UK Supreme Court.
