Aberdeenshire Provost Jill Webster is testing her nerves to the limit with a new challenge to raise money for charity.

The Provost’s Challenge will see Provost Webster taking on two adrenaline-fuelled activities in one day, first climbing and then abseiling down a cliff-face and gorge walking through a river in the beautiful backdrop of Royal Deeside.

The Provost is swapping her civic chain for a wetsuit to raise money for the STV Appeal, now in its third year, which focuses on children and young people affected by poverty in Scotland.

Outdoor activity company Adventure First Ltd, based in Aberdeen, has agreed to manage the activities for free as their donation.

Provost Webster will travel to Royal Deeside on October 3 to take part in the challenge. She will start by scaling a cliff face and abseiling back down again at the Pass of Ballater before taking the plunge into the River Lui, at the picturesque Linn O’ Dee in a gorge walking challenge – swimming, wading and exploring her way up the river.

She said: “The STV Appeal is a very worthwhile cause which, in only three years, has already made a fantastic contribution to many projects supporting young people across Scotland, including Aberdeenshire.

“I wanted to do something that put me outside of my comfort zone, in the hope of raising as much money as possible.

“This is also a great opportunity to highlight the variety of exciting outdoor activities available in Aberdeenshire, a much better way to see some of the region’s beautiful landscapes than passing by in a car or seeing them from a distance?”
