Fraserburgh’s Super Saturdays have been shortlisted for a prestigious regeneration award.

The monthly community-based events have been nominated in the 2014 SURF Awards, a national awards scheme that highlights successes in regenerating Scottish communities.

The awards are delivered each year by SURF, an independent network of regeneration organisations, in partnership with the Scottish Government.

Fraserburgh’s Super Saturdays have been shortlisted in the Town Centre Regeneration category, alongside ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ in Glasgow and Glengate Hall in Kirriemuir.

Over the coming weeks, the judging panel will be visiting all of the projects to gather a better understanding of their impact. The five category winners will then be announced by Minister for Local Government and Planning Derek Mackay MSP on Tuesday, December 2, at the SURF Awards Presentation Dinner event in Glasgow’s Radisson Hotel.

Commenting, former Super Saturday co-ordinator Ann Bell said: “As I was involved with co-ordinating the pilot of Super Saturdays I am delighted that this worthwhile initiative is being recognised.

“The Super Saturdays have certainly been instrumental is assisting the regeneration of Fraserburgh town centre.

“Under the new co-ordinator, Anne Gostling, Super Saturdays are going from strength to strength and I really hope they get this recognition for all those in the community and businesses who have supported it.”

Head of Economic Development Belinda Miller said: “I would like to congratulate everyone who has been involved in organising and running the Super Saturdays since they began last spring.

“The regeneration action plan for Fraserburgh recognises that regeneration is not just about buildings and the economy but also about communities and especially an active town centre.

“By working together, the partners involved in this scheme have delivered that and it has been wonderful to see both local residents and visitors to the area making the most of what the stalls have to offer.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to attend the final Super Saturday which has a festive theme and will be held on December 13.”
