The SPKA held their third race event of the 2013 Scottish Kite Buggy Race Championship on January 19 and 20 at Luce Bay.
Four kite buggy racers from Aberdeenshire made the long journey south to Galloway for the event despite the forecast for heavy snow and strong winds.
With 20-30mph winds throughout the weekend and wind chill temperatures of -7˚c, six races were run in total over a fast, technical course.
After a bad start on Saturday morning, Pete Buchan from Fraserburgh put in an excellent performance in four of the six races to finish 6th overall in the event which sees him move into 5th position in the overall championship.
Mark Davies, also from Fraserburgh, had the best event of his season so far with some very competitive racing which saw him complete the weekend in 5th place and moving him into 7th place in the championship.
Meanwhile, Alan Payne, from Aberdeen, spent the weekend in a very close fought battle with both Pete Buchan and Mark Davies, all three racing at speeds of up to 40mph in their kite buggies and jostling for position in every race.
After six races, Alan finished in 7th place for this event and 6th place in the overall championship.
Richard Leslie from Ellon also had a great weekend of racing in the 16” wheel class, finishing in 14th place overall with 2nd place in the class. His results at this event see him move into 10th place overall and 1st place in the class for the championship so far.
With 10 places available on the Scottish team for this year’s European Championship, and four race events remaining, the competition remains fierce as everyone battles for a place. The next race event will be held at St Andrews on February 16 and 17.
