Graham Buchan of Elite Photography, Fraserburgh, was the judge in the themed competition ‘Night Time’.
Thirty-nine images had been submitted and they covered a wide range of night time subjects, from architecture, both from the UK and abroad, to harbour scenes, landscapes and fire.
In presenting the marks awarded to each image Graham gave advice on how some could be improved and general advice on taking night time shots.
He said that exposure was the key. Images should be exposed for the highlights as it was possible to bring out detail in the shadows with post processing. If the highlights were overexposed they could not be ‘rescued’ in the computer.
He warned against shooting in an ‘automatic camera mode for night time shots. Cameras in these situations will see the overall image as too dark and compensate by over exposing the lighter parts of the image.
Two images received his top mark of 18: ‘Empty Park Bench’ by Stuart Fenty and ‘Southbank’ by Paul Woodburn.
Three images received 17 marks: ‘Candle Light’ by Kevin Potter, ‘Trawler at Dusk’ by Alister Henderson and ‘Millennium Bridge’ by Paul Woodburn.
