It’s been an exciting year for Fraserburgh singer Mary May with the release of her new CD ‘This is What You Are’.
She has been gigging around Scotland with her Quartet to promote it since April and the official CD launch will be at the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh on 1st November.
The band had a show at the Blue Lamp Jazz Club in Aberdeen in April with the full horn section from the album line-up, and a gig featuring the wonderful sax player Craig Dawson at the HMS Frigate Unicorn in Dundee.
In May they played at the Moray Jazz Club in Elgin, Fife Jazz Club, and this month were at Whighams Jazz Club in Edinburgh.
Last weekend they played at Pitmedden Music Fest and they are at Cheers Bar and Tavern in the beer garden on Saturday 20 June from 3.30 – 6pm.
The album has had a lot of airplay so far and features a full horn section with the Quintet.
The music has been described as ‘Gregory Porter meets Peggy Lee’ and the songs range from compositions by Stevie Wonder to Barry Manilow.
Last year the band had a sell-out show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and this year they return to the fringe with a new show ‘Mary May – Lady Jazz’.
They will be playing some of the tracks this Saturday.
Speaking to The Fraserburgh Herald Mary May said: “We have been touring around Scotland to promote it since April and this is our ‘home turf’ launch.
“The CD has picked up a lot of interest and has been selling internationally, and we had a lot of airplay.”
Mary is originally from Inverallochy while the rest of the band is based around Aberdeen.
